Exposure is the name of the game for every sports entity, both on the field (or track) and off. One of the main issues surrounding our sport in the U.S. is that USATF doesn't have that strong of presense, especially in the road race community. While many road races apply for sanctioning from USATF, which enables them to be insured, USATF's association with the road races is minimal at best.
This creates a rather large problem for USATF's visibility, in that the largest segement of the sport simply doesn't understand what USATF and what services they can provide.A relatively easy way to fix this is for USATF to host their own events.
For quite a while now, USATF simply rents out their championship events, giving it to the best bid applicant for that respective championship. USATF offers minimal support to the event, as the events reap the entire reward. My suggestion would be for USATF to set up a road racing circuit of their own. If the Rock n' Roll series can be such a success, why can't USATF put one on.
Putting on a series of races, especially rather large races, is a full time job for many individuals, but it can easily be a very profitable venture. I'll set this out in a potential format in tomorrow's blog post.
